JB Wells voting box moves permanently to Riverside

Commissioners call for Nov. 8 general election

Individuals who vote at Gonzales County Voting Precinct 12 will no longer go to JB Wells Expo Center to cast their ballots — not just for the November general election, but from now on.

The Gonzales County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to move the Voting Precinct 12 box to the Riverside Community Center, 110 Saint Lawrence St., permanently, beginning with the upcoming Nov. 8 election.

In the past, Voting Precinct 12 used to be located at Riverside Community Center, but several years ago it was changed to JB Wells with the expectation the site could accommodate any increase in the number of voters casting ballots.

At the Monday, Aug. 22, commissioners meeting, County Elections Administrator Gwen Schaefer said events at JB Wells had forced a move to Riverside during the most recent county and city elections and she doesn’t want voters to get confused about where they should be voting or create any impediment, so she asked commissioners to make the move back to Riverside a permanent one.

Commissioners also voted to approve the notice of election to be held Tuesday, Nov. 8. The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 11.

Offices on the ballot will be County Judge, County Sheriff (Unexpired Term), District Clerk, County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, Precinct 2 Commissioner, Precinct 4 Commissioner, Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace, Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace, County Democratic Chair and County Republican Chair.

The only contested race on the ballot is for Sheriff, to serve out the remainder of the unexpired term of the late Sheriff Robert Ynclan, who died just nine months into his term last September. Current Sheirff Keith Schmidt was appointed later that month to succeed Ynclan and won the Republican nomination this March.

He faces a challenge from Democrat Clay Allen, who was among those initially considered by commissioners to serve out Ynclan’s term before Schmidt was appointed.

All other races are uncontested — Pat Davis (County Judge), Janice Sutton (District Clerk), Lona Ackman (County Clerk), Sheryl Barborak (Treasurer), Seth Fullilove (County Surveyor), Donnie Brzozowski (Precinct 2 Commissioner), Collie Boatright Jr. (Precinct 4 Commissioner), Deidra Voigt (Precinct 1 JP), Jesse Almaraz (Precinct 3 JP) and Darryl Becker (Precinct 4 JP).

Early voting will take place from Oct. 24 through Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Extended hours will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 24-25 and on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Early voting locations are at the Randle Rather Building, 427 Saint George St., Gonzales; the City of Nixon Building, 302 E. Central, Nixon; and the Waelder City Hall, 300 Hwy. 90 W, Waelder.
