Jerry Victor Vara, Sr., 58, of Austin, passed away after his battle with cancer on Wednesday,

January 15, 2025, where he was surrounded by his loved ones. He was born here in Gonzales,

on May 02, 1966, to Helen Marie Cantu and Jesse Ramos Vara, Jr. Jerry graduated from

Gonzales High School in 1985.

Jerry shared 41 wonderful years of marriage with his wife Maria Elena. Together, they raised

their family of 5 daughters, 2 sons, 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was the best

father, grandfather and great grandfather; he was always present for their school functions,

forever showing his love and support. Jerry looked forward to every family function, anytime he

could barbeque, enjoy his quality time and listen to his favorite tunes he was happy to do it.

Barbequing was one of his favorite hobbies, he was also a dedicated Dallas Cowboys and

Texas Longhorns fan and attended many of their games. In his younger years, Jerry and Maria

attended many rock concerts, they’d watch their favorite heavy metal bands in person, making

the best memories they could. He had a large collection of vinyl records and CDs, and he

shared his passion of rock n’ roll music with his children. Jerry also saved every ticket to every

concert and game he went to, he had a photo album to prove it.

Family trips to Port Aransas and Rockport brought him so much joy, he loved to fish and teach

his kids and grandkids to fish. Jerry was also quite the handyman, he fixed many things and he

loved helping people; he would drive across town just to fix a doorknob for you. His heart was

full of love and faith. He fought valiantly until the end, and his family remembers the physical

sacrifice he made to stay as long as he could.

He is survived by his wife Maria Elena Vara, his daughters Jennifer Vara (Trinidad), Jeralyn Vara

(Adalid), Monica Vara (David Arriaga), Felicia Rivera, and Diana Vara, his sons Albert Camarillo

and Jerry Vara, Jr. He is also survived by his mother Helen Marie Cantu, his sisters Jeanette

Contreras (Fidel), Lisa Vara (Anthony) and Lucinda Vara (Claudio). And his most precious 18

grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
