He served in the Army National Guard and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana before being transferred to Fort Louis, Washington.

Upon his return in 1968, he married Patsy Lesser at First Baptist Church, Brenham, and on June 29, 2021, they celebrated 53 years together. In 1970 their daughter, Jennifer Jean Hermann, was born and John and Patsy were always very proud of her.

John was a savvy business and the ultimate family man. His cornerstones were God, family and community and he lived that out every day. He was generous with his time and support in the church, community and with his beloved family. John never met a stranger. His smile and sense of humor will be forever missed and remembered.
