Heading into the final week of the season, the Lady Apache soccer team was sitting in third place, looking to tune-up for the playoffs. Coming off losses in two of their last three games, the playoffs still seemed likely, but seeding was definitely a point of emphasis.
“I want [to finish] third,” said Coach Karen Bunch. “Top four out of six make it [to the playoffs] but coming in fourth will put us playing Uvalde. They are pretty darn good!”
On Friday night, they hosted the Palacios Sharkettes and dropped a 1-0 decision. Despite the Lady Apaches controlling most of the game, the Sharkettes were able to take advantage of a lapse in the Gonzales defense early in the first half to score the lone goal of the game.
“We kept possession most of the game but could not finish a shot on goal,” said Bunch. “We had a rough night shooting for some reason.”
The Lady Apache will wrap up the regular season on Monday in Rockport. A win or tie against the district runner-up Rockport-Fulton Lady Pirates would assure the Lady Apaches of the third seed and playoff date against Pleasanton. A loss would most likely relegate Gonzales to fourth place, where they would face Uvalde.
