The Gonzales Lady Apaches FC are back for the 2025 soccer season under third year head coach Shantael Trimm.
The Lady Apaches hosted the Victoria Lady Titans for the season opener Monday, Dec. 30 at Apache Field.
The Lady Apaches got on the board early with a goal by Adriana Pop in the first half and the defense put on a very strong performance until the final five minutes of the game.
“We came in strong. We were prepared. We played this team the last two years that I've been with them. Our first year we had a loss against them. Last year we won against them, so we knew that it was like a good, hard competition. We were prepared for that, and they came in strong, and really showed up today,” Trimm said.
Victoria East scored the game-tying goal from an accidental own goal by the Lady Apaches in the final five minutes of the game, but the defense held its ground despite allowing the late goal.
“Our defense had to be strong today. They have over the last few years, and they continue to hold up. Unfortunately, things like that happen — the deflection off of our defender into our own goal. So I just made sure the girls know that they need to keep their heads held high. We didn't let the team score on us. We had an accidental own goal and that's okay, because things like that happen. What was more important is that we got that good, hard, competitive game in before our district games start,” Trimm said.
The Lady Apaches competed in the Bay City tournament Thursday, Jan. 2 through Saturday, Jan. 4, and Trimm set up that appearance to take on tougher opponents in preparation for district.
“I set it up like that so that they are prepared to play these hard teams so that they come in knowing that they're going to have to fight hard from the first second of the game from the time the whistle blows, and they did a really good job doing that today. So I think we're really prepared for that tournament.” Trimm said.
The Lady Apaches will go on the road again for the Lago Vista tournament Thursday, Jan. 9 through Saturday, Jan. 11 and will have back-to-back road games against Bastrop (Monday, Jan. 13) and Halletsville (Tuesday, Jan. 14).
The Halletsville and Bastrop matches start at 5 p.m.
