The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs hosted the Falls City Lady Beavers Tuesday, Nov. 12 for a non-district game.
The Lady Mustangs struggled in the first quarter, trailing 10-1, but quickly made it a competitive game in the last three quarters of the game.
Lady Mustangs head basketball coach Trevor Johnson was happy with how his team kept on fighting despite trailing at first.
“Our lineup this year, we go five in and five out with our subs, so we try to go with whatever group's going hot in the game, and at the first of the game, they threw a press at us that we weren't prepared for. So going down 10-1 was tough, but when I got the younger kids in there, they showed good fight, and they climbed us back in the game, and possession after possession, so proud of them for that,” Johnson said.
The Lady Mustangs took a 50-48 lead at the end of the third quarter and kept their fighting spirit in the final minutes of the fourth.
“That's a good positive thing to show. We have a pretty good freshman that made a lot of good plays for us tonight in Ruby Mendez, number 24, so we have some growing up to do. A lot of our younger girls have some shoes to fill from last year, but we are very senior heavy, and I think that's what helps us out. But having seven seniors on the team, I think that helps us with the leadership and just they want to win so bad that they teach the young ones to keep fighting,” Johnson said.
The Lady Mustangs will host an intra-county game between the Gonzales Lady Apaches Friday, Nov. 15.
Johnson knows it’ll be tough matchup, but has confidence in his team.
“I like some of the things that Falls City threw at us tonight, because I think it's going to kind of help us prepare for Gonzales, which is a little more, little bit different style team. Gonzales is a little bit quicker, so we're going to have to make some adjustments but I like our fight tonight. And that always gives us a chance so we're looking forward to the matchup on Friday,” Johnson said.
The Gonzales game tips off at 6:30 p.m.
