GONZALES — Francisco Javier Rosas, the man charged with leaving the scene of an accident that claimed the life of a local man Saturday, remains in custody in Gonzales County Jail.

On Jan. 10, GPD officers responded to a reported two-vehicle collision at the intersection of St. Paul and Hwy 90A that resulted in the death of whom funeral directors identified as Guadalupe Hernandez, 21, of Gonzales.

Capt. Allen Taylor said Rosas fled the scene of the crash, which caused a brief power outage in the area. Taylor added that Rosas was not at fault in the wreck. The deceased was driving the other vehicle.

County Judge David Bird later issued a warrant for Rosas, 26, of Gonzales, on a charge of accident involving death.

During the 19-hour search, investigators interviewed the mother of Rosas’ child and others who they believed Rosas would contact for assistance.

They also were able to “ping” Rosas’ phone during the search that led them to a rural area just outside the Gonzales city limits, but were not able to locate Rosas in the dark, rainy conditions.

At 3:30 p.m. Jan. 11, Rosas turned himself in to the Gonzales Police Department, at which time he was taken into custody at Gonzales County Jail. He is charged with accident involving death, and is being held in lieu of a $90,000 bond.
