Mary Ann Sofka Brzozowski, 86, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025. Mary Ann was born November 20, 1938 in Moulton to Frank and Rosie Poposky Sofka. She married Vernon Brzozowski on September 20, 1958 in the St. James Catholic Church. Mary Ann had been a member of the Catholic Daughters and Jewell’s Jewels Performance Group where she popularly performed songs like Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man made famous by Loretta Lynn. Mary Ann was a devout Catholic woman and availed herself to whatever service to the church she could.
When Mary Ann was young, she worked beside her siblings picking cotton and enjoyed going to Church Picnics to dance accompanied by her sisters. Later she was awarded many trophies bowling in her league and delighted in making trips to the casinos with her sister and friends.
Mary Ann had worked at Gindler’s Department Store and then the China Basket. She was a loving and giving woman, she received people with respect and kindness and served these stores honorably. She was always putting her children and friends first. She was a wonderful cook and found great peace tending to her lawn and flower garden. Mary Ann did what she could to make the world a better place and memories of her will be treasured by all who knew her.
Mary Ann Brzozowski is survived by her family, sons, Vernon J. Brzozowski, Jr, “Dixie”, and Michael Steven Brzozowski, sister, Martha Bishop, dear friend Jewell Halamicek, 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, William, Edward, Alvin, Henry and Joseph Sofka, and sister, Rosie Molnoskey.
The family will receive friends from 9 am to 9:30 am Friday, May 9, 2025 in St. James Catholic Church with prayers of the Holy Rosary beginning at 9:30 am in the Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am in St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Jason Martini as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. James Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers: James Molnoskey, Steven Malatek, Vernon Molnoskey, Jr., Johnny Brzozowski, Chris Brzozowski, and Kaylum Brozowski. Honorary pallbearer, Kenneth Molnoskey. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the St. James Catholic Church Building Fund.
