Mary Lois Philips

Mary Lois Philips, 82, of Gonzales, passed away Wednesday, May 1. Lois as she was popularly known, was born May 12, 1936 in near Yoakum to Hudnell Bernard Allen and Rona Belle Anderson Allen. She married Burnie James “B.J.” Philips on June 18, 1955 in Yoakum. Lois was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the St. James Altar Society, the Earth Angels Quilting Group and a Bridge Club.

As we celebrate the life of Mary Lois Philips, we reflect on who she was and the impact she made on those around her. Known by many names, she was the same kind and loving person to those who knew her. She loved taking care of those around her, in whatever role her title.

With over 30 years of service in the local school district, “Mrs. Philips” was often greeted with “Oh, I remember you” by former students. Usually, such statements were followed by a funny anecdote.

As “Lois”, she was a member many groups around the community. She was a member of the Altar Society. She was also member of “Earth Angels” a group devoted to the lost art of quilting. Lois’ quilts were a much-desired item by her friends and family, and she quilted several wedding, birth and special occasion quilts. Lois was also an accomplished Bridge player and, as a savvy player, no doubt was called other names. Lois also made frequent trips to Louisiana to enjoy casino “gambling” with family and friends.

“Mom” and “Meemaw”, to her children, her grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Among her favorite requests were her miniature pecan pies and “Meemaw spaghetti”.

As “Wife” for over 60 years, she was a loyal and devoted companion.

Finally, as “Child of God” she is preparing a way for those who follow, so she may once again care and comfort those she loves as she was known to do, regardless of her name.

The family would like to extend a special and sincere thank you to everyone involved with her care in her final days. Most especially the nurses in the SCU at Gonzales Memorial Hospital: Lindsey, Bailey, and Vernice. Their caring and comfort was invaluable during our time of need. We also would like to thank Dr. Terry Eska for his many years of devoted care. He was more than a physician to Lois and his compassion was always reassuring.

Lois is survived by her loving family, her beloved husband of 63 years B.J. Philips of Gonzales, daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Philips Ckodre and Clayton of Schertz, son and daughter in-law, Brian James Philips and Sandra of Gonzales, sister, Bennie Lou Kaiser of Shiner, brother, James Allen of Victoria, grandchildren, Jeremy Philips, Jenna Philips Lamb (Will), Keeley Ckodre Gesch (Jordan), Cullen Ckodre, Corbin Ckodre and a great-granddaughter Taryn Gesche. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Margie Woods and brothers, Jack and Donald Allen.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with a Holy Rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 6 in St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Mike Boulette as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery. Pallbearers: Jeremy Philips, Will Lamb, Cullen Ckodre, Corbin Ckodre, Jordan Gesch and Michael Allen. Honorary Pallbearers: Earth Angels Quilting Group, Her Bridge Club and the St. James Altar Society. Memorials may be made to the St. James Altar Society or St. James Catholic Church.
