Melvin Allen, Sr.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I  have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

To the union of Elmore Allen, Sr. and Minnie Ella (Miles) Allen a third child was born named Melvin Allen, Sr., in Gonzales, Texas on Sept. 9, 1948. He passed on Sept. 12, 2020.

At the age of 12, he confessed Christ at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. H. Martin. He attended BTU, Sunday School, Sheppard’s Boys League and the choir.

Two days prior to his earthly transition he told his sisters that he was living in the Mt. Eden Community until he finished the 6th grade and then attended the Gonzales ISD (grades 7-12) and graduated in the class of 1967. During this time was when the family moved to Gonzales, Texas on the Moulton Road. Melvin loved fishing, hunting and cooking. He often went to the casinos with his neighbor.

Melvin worked as a chef for the Holiday Inn after receiving a certificate in culinary arts from the Del Mar College of Corpus Christi, Texas. He would cook large meals for family gatherings. Melvin’s last job before retirement was an Analyst Technician with Saber (Valero) Refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. He moved to Houston, Texas for many years and played the guitar for many quarter groups and churches. Melvin would occasionally sing a solo. His favorite song was “I Don’t Know What Jesus Is To You.”

He reunited with the St. James Missionary Baptist Church in 2000 under the pastor Reverend Victor Stephens. Melvin loved his family with a passion. He would drive many miles if you called for his help. He enjoyed singing and playing at family reunions and loved riding horses.

During the time of his marriage to Alice Moultrie he became a father to his greatest joy of his life; two sons. Many years later he was blessed with a daughter. He was also blessed with three granddaughters and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his father; Elmore Allen, Sr. and mother; Minnie Ella (Miles) Allen. four brothers; Rev. Elworth Allen, Sr., Calvin Allen, Marshall Ray Allen and Elmore Allen, Jr. and one sister; Minnie Mae Mathis.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sons; Melvin Allen, Jr. of Lewisville, Texas and Sanford Allen of California. One daughter; LaTonya Piper (Marcus) of California. Three granddaughters; Scarlett, Paisle, and Neela, two grandsons; Mason and Nicolas. Two sisters; Derbie Allen Roberson and Pamela Allen-Filip of Austin, Texas. Sister-In-Law; Patricia Allen of Austin, Texas. Special friend, Merlene Cochran of Belmont, Texas. His buddy of a niece; Shallyn Mathis of Forth Worth, Texas. Two uncles; Joe Miles and Johnny Miles of Longview, Texas. 1 aunt; Betty Steward (Miles) of Houston, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.  

A funeral service was held at 12 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church on Friday, Sept. 18, followed by internment at Mount Eden Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas.
