Michael Lynn "Mickey" Lancaster passed away on April 10, 2025. He was born to Carl Jones Lancaster and Laura Boatman Lancaster on May 1, 1950, in Memorial Hospital, Houston, Texas.
Mickey lived most of his youth in Spring Branch in Houston and graduated from Spring Branch High School, where he played trombone in the band. His weekends during high school were often spent with his buddies at the Galveston and Freeport beaches, creating memories that would last a lifetime. After high school, he attended Southwest Texas University.
Mickey's sophisticated interest in music began at an early age. Before he was even a teenager, he was a subscriber to Down Beat magazine. His taste in music was remarkably expansive, and throughout his life, he attended countless live concerts—from the Dave Brubeck Quartet to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and intimate coffee house performances by artists like Townes Van Zandt. His passion for music extended to his own talents as well; Mickey was proficient on the keyboard, harmonica, accordion, and trombone. He played in several bands including Angus, Armed and Dangerous, Chelsea Station, and others, continuing to play until his passing.
In the early 1980s, Mickey became a drilling mud engineer, working offshore on oil rigs that took him as far as Egypt. When the oil industry declined, Mickey demonstrated his resilience and adaptability. With a young child to support, he pivoted careers and became very successful in real estate, maintaining his license until his death.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mickey had a passion for the open road. He once owned a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that he treasured and had the opportunity to make the pilgrimage to Sturgis. He also proudly owned a vintage Chevrolet El Camino, maintaining a loving yet sometimes challenging relationship with the classic vehicle.
Several years ago, Mickey and his wife Kathy left their home in the Houston area and moved just outside of Gonzales, where they found comfort and peace in the country while making many new friends. In recent years, as Kathy battled cancer, Mickey was a constant presence at her side—a sweet and loving husband whose devotion never wavered.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bobby Carlton Lancaster. Mickey is survived by his wife Kathryn, and his son James C. Lancaster, an 8-year veteran Harris County peace officer. He is also survived by former wife Charlotte Ehrhart, and his stepsons James Whitehead (wife Cynthia) of Katy, Texas and William Whitehead (wife Elizabeth) of Spring, Texas; and step-grandchildren Ava Whitehead, Josh Poser, and Hannah Wilkinson.
