The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs were back on the basketball court for their season opener against the Nordheim Pirates Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The Mustangs took care of business with a 64-37 win over the Pirates, kicking off their season at 1-0.
The Mustang defense shutdown Nordheim’s offense to only 37 points, and head coach Carlton McKinney was very happy with how his defense started.
“That's how we're gonna have to play. We're gonna have to be a team that gets into people. And we basically, we just played man. We're gonna get those points where we're running traps out of it, but that's the big thing for us to just making sure we can defend people,” McKinney said.
The offense took advantage from Nordheim’s turnovers and scored more than 20 points on those miscues.
Senior Tristen Mikesh helped the offense get key shots and points to secure the opening season win.
“Feels good. Coming in before the games, early to practice, coming every day, just working on my form, working on my shots. Feels good when they fall down,” Mikesh said.
McKinney was really impressed on his offense took advantage on the turnovers against Nordheim.
“Offensively, it's just, it starts to generate stuff our deep defense we get some easy layups and then all those up the kids start feeling good about themselves, and in the ball once the ball goes to the basket then. the kids kind of get excited,” McKinney said.
The Mustangs go on the road Thursday, Nov. 21 for their first tournament in Poteet.
McKinney said he is looking forward to playing in the Poteet tournament and getting a couple more games under their belts to get into basketball shape.
The Mustangs will also be on the road against the Gonzales Apaches Friday, Nov. 29.
