New Gonzales Little League board dealing with alleged embezzlement by former board member

The new members of the Gonzales Little League board of directors have learned of the alleged embezzlement of funds by a member of the former board.

“We are in possession of a signed confession regarding the embezzlement of league funds,” new league vice-president Dane King told The Inquirer today (Thursday, May 6).

The Inquirer is aware of the person's identity, but is waiting for the formal release of their name and the amount involved.

King said that the board will soon turn the matter over to law enforcement. Earlier today, Gonzales Police Lt. Jason Montoya said the department had not received a complaint.

King said that an independent third-party financial audit is being conducted.

The new board held its first meeting on May 2.

According the King, there are now “13 to 14” members on the board, with president Gary Clack the lone holdover from the previous board.

“We are committed to full transparency in all of our actions,” King said.

That includes a future presentation to the Gonzales City Council and a public forum.

“We want everything to be completely transparent,” King said. “We are getting things set up the right way.”

The new board is in the process of gaining access to the league’s Facebook page and, once in control, will post regular updates and information.

The league’s next meeting will be Wednesday, May 26 at 6 p.m. at Graham Land and Cattle Co. and is open to the public, except for matters that merit a closed (executive) session.

Gonzales Little League uses city-owned fields at Independence Park. Earlier in the year, the city council required the league to provide proof of insurance and financial statements in order to use the fields in 2021.

District 4 Councilman Rob Brown told The Inquirer that the financial statements provided did not show any embezzlement of funds. The Inquirer is reaching out to other members city council and the mayor for comment.

The Inquirer will update this story as more information becomes available.
