New men’s store will keep your crew dressed well

Local business owner Kayla Craven walks briskly around her well-appointed and inviting store, Crew, working side by side with an employee before taking a break to speak to the Inquirer.

While preparing for the upcoming grand opening of her new local store there were many tasks to complete. Craven has invited Gonzales residents to get to know a little about her and her business prior to her grand opening event.

The event will be held at the Crew Men’s store, 1026 Saint Louis St., Gonzales, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 14. There will be snacks, giveaways and free lunch during the grand opening.

How did you get your start in business?

I worked for a software company for ten years, did email marketing and social media. So, I do have that marketing and sales background but was looking for something different, a change for myself, and was frustrated because we didn’t have anything for our guys (I’m married and have two boys).

What is your background / experience in business management?

This is my first company, I have a degree in marketing, as well as an MBA, but it is my first time owning a business.

How did you get your start in THIS business, men’s wear?

Just the frustration of not having clothes for men or boys (because we are going to carry items down to 2T) and so I wanted somewhere that people could shop locally, for guys.

Why Gonzales?

Well, we live here, my husband is from here, and I wanted to be part of this community. I think we have a lot of awesome women owned businesses and so I wanted to be a part of what’s going on here, which I think is amazing. And I think we have a lot of men here who are awesome who deserve to have a place to shop.

Who motivates you?

My family. My husband and my kids.

Why the name Crew?

Our last name is Craven, and I call my family the Craven crew, so it only seemed right to call it Crew, it’s inspired by them. Actually, our logo has a rocking C, which is a family brand. We are always trying to reinforce that we are about family.

What do you see in your future?

Hopefully, if it’s continued to be supported, in the way that we have been, I would love to be able to offer more to our guys, we also have something up our sleeve, so you have to stay tuned, I have a few other things planned.

What is your inspiration as a stylist?

To help others be true to themselves and see their own individual uniqueness and beauty.

Fashion advice – tips on how you dress up your own wardrobe?

I go with what I feel comfortable in, how I feel, and what I feel comfortable wearing. I have also brought things in for the store to that purpose, because I want people to be able to feel comfortable, confident and good both in the store and in their wardrobe choices. So I would say I am motivated by how I am feeling.

Favorite quote?

I can do anything through Christ, who strengthens me. That gives me a lot of courage, and hope and I think it’s true. I think if you get it in your mindset, like I have with the store, it can be accomplished.
