New trash pick-up timeframe in Nixon

Citizens in Nixon will soon have to place trash out front of their property by 6 a.m. Monday or risk it not being picked up. Nixon city council voted unanimously to amend the City Garbage and Rubbish Ordinance to specify a time and day for pick-up.
“If you designate 6 a.m. and they go by 6 a.m. and there’s nothing out, then that’s on the person that didn’t take it out on time,” City Attorney Eddie Escobar said. “and if that means they got to take it out the night before, that’s fine.”
The city handles trash pick-up itself instead of contracting to a third-party company. It also breaks Nixon into four zones for trash pick-up. Each of the four zones is assigned a pick-up day. The city keeps record of each house it picks up from and whether or not they put their trash out.
Other news from the meeting:

• No action was taken on any action items related to the city’s splash pad plan. The financing plan in discussion was intended for an economic development corporation, which the City of Nixon does not have. The city will continue negotiations in regard to funding, contracting and choosing a location for the splash pad.
• Council clarified an ordinance that declared the front of a property or lot is the front of a house. The ordinance had previously caused some confusion regarding addressing for trailer homes in the area.
• Following the findings of a Texas Municipal League study, council denied reimbursement for damage to a residence at 100 East 4th Street. The damage stemmed from a 2015 incident that was blamed on a sewer line issue.
• Discussions on purchasing real estate in city limits to be used as a temporary housing incentive to attract new officers to the Nixon Police Department were tabled.
• Alderpersons Aguirre and Fatheree were issued statements of office by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Darryl Becker.
  Fire chief, police chief and city administrator reports were read and accepted as is.
• Gonzales County Tax Assessor-Collector Crystal Cedillo was appointed to calculate and prepare 2019 effective, rollback and sales tax rates for the City of Nixon.
• July 1 is the new day for Nixon’s next regularly scheduled council meeting.
• May 13 meeting minutes were approved, financial statements were read and bills were paid.
