Nixon-Smiley places fifth at regionals, sending two powerlifters to state

Two Nixon-Smiley Mustang powerlifters are going to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 3 State Meet after impressive performances at the Region 4, Division 3 Meet in Saratoga on Friday, March 11.

Overall, the Nixon-Smiley boys finished in fifth place out of 31 schools competing at regionals, scoring a total of 16 points. East Bernard was the overall winner with 28 points, followed by Palacios (22), Wallis Brazos (19) and El Maton Tidehaven (17).

Jason Adams won the 132-pound weight class with a total of 1,030 pounds, including 375 on squat, 245 on bench press and 410 on dead lift. Martin Moreno placed second in the 165-pound weight class for his total 1,385 pounds, which included 545 on squat, 300 on bench press and 410 on dead lift.

Tyler Barrientez placed fourth in the 123-pound weight class with a total of 865 pounds, including 335 on squat, 200 on bench and 330 on dead lift. Aiden Flores finished fifth in the 114-pound weight class with a total of 690 pounds, including 260 on squat, 165 on bench press and 265 on dead lift. Oscar Acosta finished fifth in the 148-pound weight class with a total of 1,070 pounds, including 410 on squat, 245 on bench and 415 on dead lift.

The state meet will be held March 26 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
