Old-school leg work leads to new-school lead, arrest by Gonzales Police in Circle K robbery

Posted

A canvass of security camera footage from local businesses by the Gonzales Police Department turned up a key clue that resulted in the arrest of a suspect in the early morning robbery of the Circle K store, 1107 E. Sarah Dewitt Drive, on Tuesday, July 6.

Anthony Ariel Leiva Chavez, 21, of Honduras, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Chavez lives in Gonzales, but is in the United States illegally.

Video from the store showed a suspect wearing a hat, mask, long-sleeve shirt and black pants. He was brandishing a hand gun as he demanded money.

The employee complied in handing over the money. The suspect then fled on foot.

Later that day, Capt. Gayle Autry, Lt. Jason Montoya and Investigator Victor Izaquirre went door-to-door to businesses near the Circle K looking for video footage that might aid the investigation.

They caught a major break when footage from businesses showed a person matching the suspect’s description entering a car a few blocks from the Circle K.

The car was shown to have a Honduran flag painted on it. A car matching the description was later stopped and Chavez arrested.
