Study club organizes Little Free Library at JB Wells

What in the wide, wide world is a “Little Free Library” (LFL)?

Little Free Library is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, based out of Hudson, Wisc., that promotes literacy through neighborhood book exchanges, usually in the physical form of a public bookcase.

The organization was founded in 2012. More than 100,000 public book exchanges are currently registered with the LFL organization and branded as “official” Little Free Libraries.

Anyone can join this global book-sharing movement – and that’s exactly what the Sesame Study Club has done.

The Sesame Study Club was founded April 10, 1929 in the home of Mrs. W.J. Hildebrand for the purpose of organizing a study club. It recently has turned its attention to supporting “literacy and learning” in a broader sense in the community. Sesame members have volunteered to read to children during the time of COVID restrictions. This endeavor led to the decision to donate and maintain a Little Free Library (LFL) at JB Wells Park.

Jenice Benedict, a past president and current treasurer of Sesame Study Club, met with JB Wells arena manager Amanda Garza. Benedict stated that they “have secured the time of 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday April 13, 2022, as the official redribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Little Free Library.”

JB Wells Park is one of the most visited places near Gonzales proper, not only by residents but by visitors from other towns and cities. The Sesame Study Club has recognized that adults, teens, and children jointly use the park and will enjoy picking a magazine or book to read during their downtime in their horse trailers, campers or hotels, alike.

Guests of Gonzales Texas will be able to find the Little Free Library using their smart phone by searching its GPS location on a LFL world location map.
