“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15

Raymond Fred Zella Sr. passed away on Aug. 1, 2021, in Gonzales, Texas. Though he and his siblings grew up in the Hamon community, he was a lifelong Gonzales resident. He married Leona Marie Kuntschik on Jan. 8, 1951, and they enjoyed over 70 years of marriage together.

Raymond was known for always having a smile to share, and a story to tell. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips in his spare time. He was a skilled craftsman, gardener, and domino player. He enjoyed watching football and listening to country and western music.

From big things like 70 years of marriage and being a faithful father and grandfather, to small things like cultivating crops and storing tools, Raymond will be remembered by family and friends as the man who always did things the right way.

Raymond had been a member and former President of the Gonzales Hermann Sons Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus.

Raymond is survived by his adoring wife: Leona Marie Zella; loving son and daughter-in-law: Raymond Fred “Raymie” Zella and Dorothy, of Gonzales; grandchildren: Kristin Matias, John Braxton Zella, and Zachery Earl Zella; brothers: Carl Zella (Delores), Robert Zella, and Kenneth Zella. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Adolph, Melvin, August, Joseph and Edwin Zella; sisters: Elsie Spitzenberger, Mildred Roeber and Mary Sofka.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021, in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with the Holy Rosary being recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021, in St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Jason Martini as celebrant. Interment will follow in Hermann Sons Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Braxton Zella, Charles Zella, Bryan Zella, Greg Polasek, Pat Davis, Brad Zella, Randy Zella, and Randy Berger. Honorary pallbearers: Zachery Zella, Mike and Gary Zella.
