Ruth Rutledge Brisco

Ruth Rutledge Brisco, of Sheridan, Texas, passed away on March 28, 2020 at the age of 93. She was born on Dec. 24, 1926, near Brownwood, Texas to Houston and Matilda Isabelle McCombs Rutledge.

Ruth graduated from Brownwood High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood. She married Lavo Brisco on July 15, 1956.

In 1951, she was working for the gas company and answered an ad for a school teacher in Sheridan, Texas. Mr. Gosch hired her over the telephone, and she taught in Sheridan from 1951 until 1971. In 1974, after a brief retirement, she started teaching school in Ezell, Texas, where she taught until 1980. Once again, she retired until a midyear teaching position opened up in Columbus. She taught in Columbus until May of 1983. All together she taught school for 30 years. Upon retirement from teaching, she and her daughter opened Courthouse Square Flowers and Gifts in Hallettsville. In 1988, the flower shop was sold and she retired. Her hobbies included gardening, raising orchids, working crossword puzzles and dancing. She was a member of the Hallettsville Garden Club, an area coordinator for District IV Texas Garden Clubs and a member of the Sheridan Lions Club.

Ruth was preceded in death by: her son, Kevin Brisco; her parents; her brother, Jimmy McCombs Rutledge; Half-Brothers, Fay Rutledge, Houston Rutledge, Samuel Rutledge and Jessie Rutledge; Half-Sisters, Elsie Rutledge, Ida Mae Rutledge Guggloz, Marjorie Rutledge Carter and Mary Ross Sartain.

Ruth is survived by: her husband of 63 years, Lavo Brisco; daughter, Regena Williamson and husband W.O.; and granddaughter, Lenora Williamson.

Due to COVID-19 Virus regulations, Mrs. Brisco's services will be private.
