Sales tax allocations increase for most of Gonzales County

Three of the four municipalities in Gonzales County saw increases in sales tax allocations for the month of December, according to information released by the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced last week he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $936 million in local sales tax allocations for December, 18.4 percent more than in December 2020. These allocations are based on sales made in October by businesses that report tax monthly.

For the month of December 2021, Gonzales County municipalities received a combined $252,665.04 in sales tax allocations, up $26,695.14 or 11.8 percent from the $225,969.90 received during December 2020.

Overall for the year, sales tax allocations are down from the $3,047,283.46 collected in 2020 to the $3,007,326.97 collected in 2021, a decrease of $39,956.49 or 0.01 percent.

Sales tax allocations for Gonzales, the largest city in the county which generates the lion’s share of sales tax revenue, was up 9.26 percent from $192,169.71 for December 2020 to $209,981.40 for this month. For the year, however, allocations are down 3.39 percent as Gonzales only collected $2,533,836.31 for all of 2021, compared to $2,622,955.07 through this point last year.

Sales tax receipts for Nixon were up 31.22 percent for December from $26,638.99 allocated in December 2020 to $34,956.78 allocated for this month. For the year, sales tax receipts are up 7.43 percent from $335,568.89 in 2020 to $360,508.30 this year.

Waelder saw sales tax receipts of $5,931.82 this month, an increase of 18.72 percent above last December’s allocation of $4,996.35. For the year, Waelder is up 20.57 percent from $64,587.39 in 2020 to $77,877.72 this year.

Finally, Smiley’s sales tax receipts were down 17.08 percent from $2,164.85 in December 2020 to $1,795.04 this month. For the year, Smiley has seen sales tax allocations grow by 45.22 percent from $24,172.11 at this point last year to $35,104.64 this year.

Two cities in Gonzales County — Gonzales and Nixon — collect a 1.5 percent sales tax rate, while Smiley and Waelder collect a 1 percent sale tax.
