Samuel Edward Glass, DVM, 83, of Gonzales, passed away Wednesday, March 18. He was born Sept. 13, 1936 in Gonzales to Bryan Steen Glass and Merle Hart Glass. Sam married Sally Sue Neubauer on Dec. 21, 1956 in the Gonzales First Baptist Church. Sam and Sally worked together as a team and enjoyed 63 wonderful years together. Sam was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gonzales Rotary Club where he was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Avian Pathology, Century Club, The Association of Former Students of Texas A&M, and Twelfth Man Foundation. Sam was a Professor Emeritus of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Sam was raised valuing hard work and putting family above everything. He was genuinely kind, considerate and always honest. He was a man of integrity who believed a man’s word was his bond. Though he had a robust work ethic, Sam made every tournament, game and event to support his son Dale. Distance, weather or conditions never prevented him from supporting his son. Sam was the best dad. No matter what Dale may have faced, he was always assured that his dad was there to help him. Sam was also known as “Pops” by his adoring granddaughter, Macy. A forever bond was cultivated between the two from years of Sam taking the time to do the special things that created an everlasting love between a grandfather and granddaughter.

Sam was in charge of operating the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory in Gonzales for 34 years. In February of 2011, Sam and Sally donated the land where Texas A&M built the Sam & Sally Glass Poultry Diagnostic Laboratory. Sam received the Golden Feather Award in 1989 which is the top award of the Texas Poultry Federation bestowed to deserving individuals who have “gone beyond the call of duty” for the benefit of the Texas poultry industry.

Sam’s hobby was tending to his cattle. He took great pride in improving the quality of his herd. He was passionate about Aggie sports. He had been a season ticket holder for Aggie football since his Veterinary School graduation in 1960.

Samuel “Sammie” Edward Glass is survived by his adoring family; wife, Sally Sue Glass of Gonzales, son and daughter-in-law, Dale Steen Glass, MD and Ginger of Bryan, Texas, granddaughter Macy Layne Montalvo and her husband Ryan of Houston and brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Lou Glass of Gonzales. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Jean Neitsch and Audrey Kelly and his brother, Bill Glass.
