New Braunfels has the wurst, but when it comes to sausage, the Schulenburg Sausagefest is the best. Just ask Anton, the Sausagefest mascot!
The tenth annual Sausagefest will show you how the sausage gets made when this free admission event is held this Saturday, April 5, from 11:14 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. in historic downtown Schulenburg.
That’s because Sausagefest is the only festival in Texas with sausage-making contests as well as competitions for homemade wine, sauerkraut and pickles. And if you’re not into making sausaage, maybe you might take part in the sausage toss or hog calling contests, both of which have youth and adult divisions.
After a 9 a.m. 5K fun run for the early birds, everything kicks off with the “Shortest Parade in Texas” at 11:15 a.m. featuring the Schulenburg Shorthorn band. There will also be great food, dancing in the street, cold beverages, a biergarten, arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, a grand march, fun run and the American Legion Black Bean motorcycle ride, which raises money for veterans programs and honors the memory of the 17 men from the Miers Expedition executed during the Black Bean episode. Those men are buried at Monument Hill near La Grange in Fayette County.
Live music will include the Czechaholics performing from noon to 3 p.m., Mark Halata & Texavia on stage from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Doc West Music as the headliners from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce at 979-743-4514 or schulenburgsausagefest@gmail.com or go to schulenuburgsausagefest.com.
