Search continues for missing TSU student two years later

Tuesday, Dec. 13, marked two years since the disappearance of 21-year-old Texas State University student Jason Landry and his family still has few answers as to his whereabouts or what happened to the Missouri City resident.

The family has doubled from $10,000 to $20,000 a reward for information about Landry, who is believed to have possibly perished either as a result of suffering from hypothermia or possibly from foul play.

An in-person vigil for Landry, the son of Kent and Lisa Landry, was held in Luling on Tuesday night and simultaneously livestreamed on Facebook. The Caldwell County city is where Landry’s vehicle was found crashed and abandoned on Salt Flat Road by a volunteer firefighter in the early morning hours of Monday, Dec. 14, 2020.

Landry apparently was on his way to Missouri City from San Marcos to meet up with friends on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, the last time he was heard from by anyone. He had been navigating using Waze, but turned off the app to check messages on Snapchat once he reached Luling on Texas 80, missed his turnoff and instead of turning onto US 183, wound up driving east out of Luling on Salt Flat Road.

At about 11:30 p.m. that evening, according to an investigative report by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Landry lost control of his Nissan Altima and then overcorrected, going off the road to the east side and hitting a barbwire fence post.

It was unknown if he was wearing his seatbelt and the vehicle’s airbags did not deploy. Blood was not found inside the car, though Landry could have still been injured.

Landry left his mobile phone and his jacket in the car. His backpack, containing his wallet with money and credit cards, was found on Salt Flat Road, approximately 800 feet south of the accident scene. His clothing, including his watch, underwear, and shoes, were also found on Salt Flat Road, a further 100 feet south. He has not been seen or heard from in the two years since.

Search crews have continued efforts repeatedly to look for Landry or his remains in the area near where his vehicle was found in the belief that he may have died of hypothermia and exposure to the cold December weather, especially as he was in an apparent state of undress.

Landry is a white male, 6-foot-1, 170 ponds, with brown hair and brown eyes and was believed to have a goatee at the time of his disappearance. He had a scar on what is believed to be his right ankle.
