Senior running back Danyoi Taylor scored five touchdowns to lead the #2 Shiner Comanches to a 55-0 rout over Hearne on Friday night at T.J. Mills Stadium in Sealy. It will be No. 1 versus No. 2 in the rankings, setting up the biggest game in the Texas high school football playoffs in 2019.

Let’s get ready to rumble.

On Friday night, however, it was all Shiner as the defense stymied everything Hearne tried to do, and the offensive line provided gaping holes for Taylor and quarterback Tyler Palmer to run through.

Shiner struck quickly, as they went 79 yards in three plays to hit pay dirt. Taylor carried the mail into the end zone from four yards out to give Shiner a 7-0 lead at the 11:06 mark of the first quarter. After holding Hearne on its initial possession of the ball game, the Comanches stormed down the field on a six-play, 84-yard drive capped off by a 49-yard gallop by Taylor to increase the lead to 14-0 at 6:36 in the first quarter.

Shiner quickly caused a fumble on Hearne’s next possession, then moved 22 yards on three plays to score their third touchdown of the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Palmer found the end zone on a two-yard plunge.

On the first play of the second quarter, Taylor notched his third touchdown of the night as he scampered 18 yards to make the score 28-0. Later in the quarter at the 4:27 mark, Taylor scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run making it 35-0 at halftime.

In the first quarter, the Comanches defense held Hearne to minus-six yards in total offense. At halftime, Hearne had amassed a paltry 28 yards of total offense on 27 plays while Shiner had garnered 346 yards of total offense in 35 plays.

In the second half, it was déjà vu as Shiner completely dominated Hearne in all phases of the game. Taylor initiated the onslaught on Shiner’s first possession of the half by scampering 30 yards on the first play from scrimmage to build a 42-0 lead. Later, Palmer and running back Dalton Brooks scored to give Shiner a 55-0 lead. For the game, Taylor scored five touchdowns with over 225 yards Connor Winkenwerder kicked seven extra points for the Comanches.

With the win, Shiner advances to the regionals to play Refugio (12-0) on Friday night at Judson’s D.W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse.
