Shooting suspect will make first court appearance in December

A woman accused of fatally shooting her ex-husband and another woman during a domestic dispute in August will make her initial court appearance on Dec. 12, according to the Gonzales County District Clerk’s office.

Carol Hunt Russell, 55, of Gonzales, likely will enter a plea at that time and her trial date could be set in 2023.

Russell is accused by Gonzales police of killing Jesse Russell Jr., 53, of Gonzales, at a residence in the 400 block of Village Drive on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and wounding Jacquline Marlene Mathis, 58, of Gonzales, at a residence in the 1100 block of Hastings Street.

Carol Hunt Russell, who surrendered to police, remains in the Gonzales County Jail, charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond was set at $600,000 on the murder charge and $150,000 on the aggravated assault charge.
