Six beautiful homes will be open for Winterfest tour

Historic homes filled with renovated innovations, others resplendent in their restored elegance, and one that is almost untouched-by-the-years, are part of this year’s holiday home tour.

The time capsule of Texas history that is the Matthew-Wells House Museum, is owned by the State DRT and has been recently designated by the Texas Historical Commission as one of the handful of Texas House Museums.

The local chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas; owners and stewards of the furniture and fabrics, family memorabilia, and decorations are delighted with the designation. That delight is heightened by the fact that this house museum is featured in a recent Texas Highways article.

Hoping to allow more visitors than ever before to enjoy the authenticity of not only the museum house and holdings, but the authentic Christmas trim, this treasure will be open not only for the Winterfest 2021 tour times of two to six, but they will open as they do every Saturday at 10 a.m. for early visitors.

The history the pristinely maintained Matthew-Wells House Museum is quite different from than many of the other architectural masterpieces that Gonzales opens to visitors. Consider the stark contrast of the other homes on tour this Winterfest. 

Imagine the history of the one featured in the black and white 1999 Inquirer photo. A paint-splattered ladder by a newly illuminated crystal chandelier speak clearly about a history of years of neglect, and of a timely resurrection from the decay of those dark days.
