City Marshal Robles announces resignation

The citizens of Smiley can expect to see a $10 monthly increase on their utility bills, beginning Jan. 20. The decision to increase utility fees comes after the Dec. 21 approval by the city of Republic Services’ proposal to increase their contract wages for Smiley from $15 to $20 for an additional two more years.

“We did have another bid; for one trash can (it’s) $19.75 per household, any additional trash cans were $9.50,” Smiley Mayer Lisa Benavidez said. “Republic gave us a much better deal and I think with them working with us through the past, it would only be right for us to stay with Republic.”

Over the past three years, the City of Smiley has been paying an extra $2 fee for each resident. The city’s goal, now, with the increased rate, is to pay back the debt and break even, according to Benavidez. The decision was met with only one opposition from council member Diane Moreno.

Republic Service representative Terry Gawlic implied that Republic Services has provided Smiley with additional services free of charge. Also, there will be no change in service schedule for the New Year weekend.

Smiley City Marshal Lawrence Robles announced at this same meeting that he would be resigning, effective Jan. 16. Robles has served as marshal of Smiley for three years, having been originally offered the position, according to him, in December 2019.

“I accepted the position without question, not knowing what all responsibilities came with such a position,” Robles said. “It’s sad for me to have to say this. This decision has been made by me. I wish nothing but success for the new City Marshal and their career.”
