Square Williams

We are mournful to announce the passing of Square Lee Williams on March 22, 2025. We were greatly blessed to have him 91 years, and he has left some wonderful memories that touched the hearts of the Williams family and friends.

A God-fearing soul who graced our lives with compassion and benevolence, Square’s presence will surely be missed. He may have passed on, but his spirit lives on in our hearts. He enjoyed talking to friends and family. He was a Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers fan, and he also enjoyed watching boxing, gardening where he grew the best greens, but most of all, he enjoyed fishing with his loved ones.

He was born on November 14, 1933, in Gonzales, Texas, to Charlie Curtis and Carrie Williams. He was raised by his grandfather, Johnny Williams, for whom he had much love and reverence and told of many stories of how he planted both love and discipline into his life and where he first learned how to garden. He attended school until the sixth grade, but it did not hinder his determination to provide.

He worked various jobs, including farming, picking cotton, driving trucks, working with Southern Clay, Tyson, and driving for GISD, where he enjoyed transporting the students.

Square met Gladys M. Lee at St. James BC, and they were married on her parents’ front porch on December 12, 1964. She preceded him in death in June of 2018. He spoke often of her and her great cooking and how she made things specifically for him.

Square leaves to cherish his memory: his seven children, Robert Nash (Juanita), Lorine Henderson (Joe), Wayne Chapman, Karen Williams, Lonnie Williams, Charlie Williams (Danielle), and Gina Williams; sisters, Frances Jones and Edna Brooks; brother, Charles Curtis (Joyce); sisters-in-law, Georgia Johnson and Dessa Lampkin (Albert); and brothers-in-law, Ben Lee and Lyndon Lee (Doris).

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Virgil Williams and Elmo Curtis (Ethel); sisters, Lena Hubbard (Paul Sr.), Erlene Dudley (Lee), Willie Mae Hunt (Farris), Josie Mitchell (Utties), and Annie Lee; Square had twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
