Apache soccer sees season end in playoff loss to Boerne

The Gonzales High School boys soccer team’s season came to an end in the Area round of the UIL 4A playoffs with a 3-1 loss to Boerne on March 30 in a game played at La Vernia High School.

The Apaches (10-12-2) were the No. 3 seed in 4A District 28. They upset District 27 No. 2 La Vernia, 2-0, in the Bi-District round on March 26 to take a three-game win streak into the Area round.

Boerne was undefeated in winning the 4A District 26 title and, with a 19-1-1 overall record, is among the top teams in the playoffs.

Yet, the Apaches were not intimidated. Despite struggling the entire game to keep the ball on the Greyhounds’ side of the field, the Apaches played strong defense, anchored by Esteban Govea – who was also in goal for the shutout win over La Vernia – to repeatedly frustrate the Boerne offense.
