The Rev. Hugh Jones

The Rev. Hugh Jones passed away June 10, 2020, at the age of 85. He was the pastor of the St. Peter Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas, for 52 years. He was a native of Gonzales, Texas.

He attended Edwards High School. During his school years he was a football player and loved the game. During his years playing football at Edwards High they were district champions for many years. After finishing school, he was drafted into the United States Marines and served 12 plus years during the Korean War. After 12 years of service he was honorably discharged.

After moving back to Gonzales, he was united in holy Matrimony to Barbara Williams and to this union three children were born: Anthony, Michael, and Chandra. He attended Guadalupe Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his bachelor and doctorate degrees. He received an honorary doctorate degree from San Antonio College.

He was the third child born to Elmer and Cornelia Jones in Gonzales County. He confessed a hope in Christ at a young age at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Gonzales. Upon moving to San Antonio, he organized St. Peters Baptist church and remained faithful until death. He was the pastor for 52 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jones; mother, Cornelia Jones; father, Elmer Jones Sr.; brothers: James Jones, Walter Jones, Harold Jones, and Edward Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Michael Jones and Anthony Jones; daughter Chandra Ervin; daughters-in-law Sandra Brown and Donna Shap; granddaughters Kawanda, Tremiks, and Antonette; grandsons Domingue, Christian, Anthony Jr., and Aaron Raddron; 19 great-great grandchildren; sisters Lucille Harvey of Houston, and Ella Harris (George) of Gonzales; brother Elmer Jones Jr. (Dotson) of Austin, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

At his request, the services are private graveside held at Fort Sam Cemetery San Antonio.
