Two incumbents and a newcomer were sworn in to the Smiley city council May 15. Canvassed votes from the city’s May 4 general election showed incumbents Elisa ‘Lisa’ Douglas and Linda Warzecha securing reelection while Diana Pena Moreno won H. Wayne South’s former seat. South declined to run for reelection.

At the end of the meeting, South thanked the council and wished them well in the future.

  • Council agreed to deny AEP Texas’ proposed rate increase. AEP Texas sent a representative to the meeting to ask that they deny the electric company’s request and council agreed. AEP Texas’ request will now go before the Public Utilities Commission where, according to the AEP representative, “one ruling for all” will be made.
  • Mayor Michael Mills said council will discuss purchasing a fire truck that can use the newly purchased “Jaws of Life” tools at the next meeting.
