The University Interscholastic League released preliminary enrollment figures for all 1,388 member schools this month as well as conference cutoff numbers for the upcoming reclassification and realignment for football and all other sports and activities.

It appears Gonzales will again find itself in Class 4A, Division II for football, while Nixon-Smiley will remain in Class 3A, Division II.

Gonzales will be in just Class 4A for all other activities, while Nixon-Smiley will be in Class 3A and Waelder will be in Class 1A (the Wildcats do not play football). The UIL does not have separate divisions for other sports.

Conference cutoffs

The new UIL conference cutoffs are as follows:

• 4A 545 to 1299.

• 3A 250 to 544.

• 2A 105 to 249.

• 1A 104.9 and below.

• 1A Division II 59.4 and below. (73 schools)

• 2A Division I 164.5 to 249 (106 schools)

The UIL will reveal the final conference and district alignments during the first week of February.

Gonzales County schools

During the UIL snapshot date of Oct. 29, Gonzales reported a high school enrollment of 832 students, which will place it firmly into Class 4A. The Apaches miss having to move up to Division I by 48 students.

Nixon-Smiley reported 284 students in grades 9-12, which means the Mustangs will remain in Class 3A again for the next two years. They ended up with 34 students above the cutoff for Class 2A and 76 students below the amount required to move up to Division I.

Waelder reported having 75 students, so they are securely below the Class 1A cutoff of 104.9.
