UIL unveils new district realignment

The UIL released its biennial district realignment Monday, Feb. 3 and area football, volleyball and basketball teams now know their path toward the state championship tournament.

In football, Gonzales was placed in District 13-4AD2 with their rivals, the Cuero Gobblers, as well as Giddings, La Grange, Navasota and Smithville.

“I’m shocked,” Gonzales athletic director Mike Waldie said of the realignment. “This is the second time for me as an AD where I’m going to have a football district full of, except for one common opponent in Cuero, that is not in any other district we play for two years and as a matter of fact not even in our region. Those other schools, Giddings, Smithville, La Grange and Navasota, they’re in Region III for every other sport.”

More analysis on Gonzales’ realignment will be in a future piece.

Nixon-Smiley's district grew to seven total schools as they compete in District 15-3AD2 with Dilley, George West, Karnes City, Natalia, Poth and Stockdale.

Outside of the county, the Luling Eagles are now in a five-team district, competing in District 13-3AD1 with Blanco, Comfort, Lago Vista and Llano. Meanwhile, the Shiner Comanches will also compete in a smaller, five-team district, as they play against Flatonia, Ganado, Schulenburg and Weimar.

The volleyball and basketball districts have also been released, causing some changes with area teams.

Gonzales remains in District 27-4A for volleyball and basketball, though the district is now down to five teams. They will compete against Cuero, Geronimo Navarro, La Vernia and Pleasanton.

Nixon-Smiley was placed with San Antonio area teams for volleyball and basketball into a massive eight-team district. The Mustangs will compete in District 26-3A with Luling, Marion, Stockdale, SA Great Hearts Monte Vista, SA Cole, SA Gervin and Universal City Randolph.

Waelder will see some new faces on the court, as the Wildcats compete in District 30-1A in basketball against their rivals, the Moulton Bobkatz, as well as Austwell-Tivoli, McDade, Nordheim, Prairie Lea, Runge and TX Empowerment Academy. For volleyball, they'll compete in District 27-2A/1A with Flatonia, Ganado, Louise, Schulenburg, Shiner, Weimar and Prairie Lea.

For basketball, Shiner will compete in District 28-2A with Bloomington, Flatonia, Ganado, Louise, Schulenburg and Weimar.
