Waelder announces summer reading program

Waelder City Council announced the return of the City of Waelder Public Library Summer Reading Program at its meeting July 2. The program is for children in grades kindergarten through fifth and will run from July 22-26. Those interested must register by July 15. Registration forms can be found at Waelder City Hall and the Waelder Public Library. 

The program event schedule is as follows:

  • Monday and Tuesday, July 22-23: Reading hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 24: Reading for an hour followed by a guest appearance by Bozo the Hozo clown who will paint faces, make balloon animals and read to the children. 
  • Thursday, July 25: Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC) will give a presentation on static electricity. 
  • Friday, July 26: Arts and crafts, as well as, an award ceremony. Awards will be given to children that attend every day of the program. T-shirts will also be given out.

The program is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day except for Friday which is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Though the announcement of the program was listed as an action item on the city council’s agenda, no action was taken. 

Other news from the meeting: 

  • Minutes from the June 4, June 18 and June 24 city council meetings were approved. 
  • Outstanding bills were paid.
  • Financial reports were read and accepted as is.
  • The Waelder Police Department announced they were “95 percent” finished writing a grant to GVEC.
  • Council voted to accept the results of the 2018 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report).
  • The city will move forward with pursuing a Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) grant. 
  • Council approved a replat for Anastacio Orosco’s land. 
  • City Manager Steven McKay announced he was looking into reestablishing movie nights at the Waelder Community Center. 
  • Any fees involved with renaming Waelder City Park to Marcario García Park will be covered by private donations.
