Wanda Marie Baker, 92, went to her Lord and Savior Friday, July 16, 2021. Wanda was born April 15, 1929, in Gonzales to William Claude Rhodes and Mamie Hyatt Rhodes. Wanda married Alton James Baker on June 8, 1947, in Gonzales County. She had been a member of Eastside Baptist Church, the Reaper’s Bible study class of the church, Hermann Son’s Lodge #175, and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #4817.

Wanda loved to work in her garden, tend the rose bushes and care for her lawn. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed fishing the river and tanks. She found joy in watching hummingbirds come to feeders and taking leisurely rides in the country. She relished opportunities to take the dance floor, host and attend garage sales, and enjoy the fellowship of league bowling. She found peace in these things, but it was family that brought her true happiness.

Wanda was a loving and doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cherished having family around for Sunday dinners and holidays. She was an excellent cook and maintained an immaculate household making family visits comfortable and festive. Wanda cherished time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “Memaw,” as they called her, held them closely in her heart and her in theirs. She lived her life as example of how she wanted her family to live, a Christian and faith filled life following the commandments of God and the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

Wanda lost her husband in 1969 with a son still serving in Vietnam and another son serving in Vietnam shortly thereafter. She mustered up every bit of strength she had to care for her two remaining sons still at home. She made sacrifices and worked hard to meet everyone’s needs and strove never to be a burden on her family. Certainly, as in Proverbs 31:28, “Her children rise up and call her blessed”.

Wanda is survived by her loving sons: Donnie James Baker (Shirley) of Gonzales, Ronnie Wayne Baker of San Antonio, Roger Lynn Baker and Gary Dale Baker (Elaine), both of Gonzales. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson: Jason Scott Baker; sister: Sylvia Baker; and daughter-in-law: Vickie Baker.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2021 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2021 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow in the Gonzales City Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Shane Baker, Stephen Smith, Clay Baker, JD Baker, Christian Smith, and Shandon Baker. Honorary pallbearers: Bob Bristol, Stetson Baker, Sheldon Baker, John Lambert, Royce Owens, and Bobby O’Neal.
