Williams wins 2 bronze medals at state meet

Hernandez places 7th in the 800-meter run

Both Devon Williams and Antonio Hernandez had an impressive showing at the UIL State Track & Field meet in Austin last weekend, with Williams winning two bronze medals in shot put and discus and Hernandez placing sixth in his state meet debut in the 800-meter run.

Williams first competed in the Class 4A girls shot put event, placing third with her distance of 40-0 ¾. Taking first was Canyon’s Audrey Hughes with a distance of 45-10. Placing second was Giddings’ Ebony Wolridge with a distance of 43-2 ¼.

Williams later won bronze in the discus throw with her distance of 136-1. Taking first was Hughes with a throw of 151-8. Grulla’s Abigail Flores placed second with a throw of 142-9.

Antonio Hernandez made his state debut, competing in the Class 4A boys 800-meter run. Hernandez finished seventh with a time of 2:01.81. Taking first was San Elizario’s Edwin Gomez at 1:56.32. Following Gomez were Burkburnett’s Sloan Lewis at 1:57.35 and Decatur’s Triston Read at 1:57.68.
