Wimberley outscores Gonzales on Apaches’ home court

The Gonzales Apaches returned home for a game against the Wimberley Texans Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Apache Gym.

The Apaches struggled against Wimberley’s three-point shooting early in the game; the Texans went three of four in their first four shots from behind the arc in the game.

“Wimberley is a really good team. They're well coached. They shot the lights out from the three-point line. I guarantee their percentage was really, really high. Have to check the film,” Apaches head coach Steven Pinchback said.

The Apaches fell to the Texans, 84-60, and dropped to 3-3 on the season, but Pinchback knows it’s early in the season and his team is still growing.

“It's still just growing pains. We're still learning how to play this game. The effort’s there, we’ve just got to correct some little things that are very much coachable and teachable and correctable,” Pinchback said. “So just keep focusing on us, like I told the guys, this game right here doesn't win or lose district; we have to use this as a lesson. Prepare, learn what we did wrong, learn what we did right, and keep moving.”

Senior Gavin Legeka led the team with 14 points in the game against Wimberley.

The Apaches will go back on the road for a tournament Thursday, Dec. 5 in Hondo and Pinchback is looking forward to the games.

“Some good challenges for us, some winnable games. It's really about bonding, building team chemistry, and learning each other. We’ve still got some young guys that, you know, we’ve got some freshmen that are playing, and most of our guys are sophomores and juniors. So, you know, we're still young, we're gonna figure it out. But I just told them, ‘Don't quit,’” Pinchback said.

The Apaches will travel to San Antonio Tuesday, Dec. 10 for a game against the Cole Cougars and Pinchback is excited for the challenge.

“To get where we're going, you’ve got to play good teams. You can't soften your schedule and say ‘Hey, let's do this. Let's get 20 wins.’ No, let's play and get better and let's be challenged and you want to play high caliber teams that went to state,” Pinchback said.

The Cole game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
