The Gonzales Lady Apaches softball squad continued to make history, snapping a 19-year bi-district drought in a three-game series (11-8, 0-3, 9-5) win over Wimberley Saturday, April 27.

The Lady Apaches rallied from behind in both games one and three against the Lady Texans to secure a bi-district title for the first time since the 2005 season.

Lady Apaches head softball coach Michelle Uribe and the Lady Apaches are no stranger to coming back from behind and fighting to the end in their 2024 season.

“This team has been coming back from behind all year, so they've just got so much fight in them and it has been so fun, like just amazing for the team, the community, everyone wants to be bi-district champions,” Uribe said.

The community rallied behind the Lady Apaches in Wimberley, packing the visitor side to max capacity.

“When we're the visiting team and we have twice as many fans as the home team, that just speaks volumes about the girls that you are coaching in the community that you live in, and it feels amazing to have that kind of support,” Uribe said.

The Lady Apaches trailed, 2-1, entering the fifth inning, but sophomore second baseman Ava Carrizales (2-RBI double) and senior catcher Sydney McCray (RBI sacrifice) got RBIs on board in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Texans would quickly answer back, retaking the lead in the top of the sixth at 5-4.

With the bi-district title on the line, the Lady Apaches responded with five runs, getting RBI by sophomore Gyzelle Guevara (RBI single), junior center fielder Sarah Padilla (2-RBI double) and McCray (2-RBI sacrifice).

“It's amazing. We really came together worked with the team and you know, we're making history out here and it's a great feeling,” Padilla said.

“We haven't done this in I don't know how long and it just feels great for us to end our senior year like this,” McCray said.

On defense, freshman pitcher Dixie Rae Lester stuck out a combined 25 batters in all three games against Wimberley.

Lester was excited to throw throughout the series and was glad the defense secured the bi-district win.

“That really showed me that I know they have my back. And I have their back and we can work as a team really good,” Lester said.

The Lady Apaches head to the area round for a single-elimination matchup against the Needville Lady Bluejays, winners of District 25-4A, Thursday, May 2 in Caldwell, and Uribe and the Lady Apaches are ready for the next challenge.

“It's gonna be a little tougher challenge that we're gonna have to watch some film who we're going to come up against and really try to prepare practice what we see in the game,” Uribe said.
