Edwards Association receives donation for partial roof repairs

The Edwards Association got some needed help for minor repairs for their gym last week.

The association received several anonymous donations for roof repairs for the old high school gymnasium.

“We're going to be getting ready to start restoring a portion of the roof here at the old gym. It is the portion that covers the men’s and the ladies’ bathrooms and the whole locker room, so we're getting ready to restore that portion,” said David Tucy, president of the Edwards Association.

Tucy said that an individual donated $1,800 for the material and the city has provided a small grant to the Edwards Asssociation.

The Edwards Association was founded in the early 1980s by the alumni of Edwards High School in order to preserve the history of the city’s segregated school, which served the African-American community of Gonzales.

“The property that was the high school was sold to the city in the early 1970s and then it was given back to the alumni association in the early 1980s ... the old alumni started renovating this property and trying to restore it,” Tucy said.

Right now the Edwards Association is focusing on a portion of the roof, Tucy said, but he added in the future they want to redo the entire roof.

“Along with that, we want to start renovation on some of the other classrooms that's in the other building, the classroom buildings. We have future plans for those rooms as well. We're looking at trying to do some senior activities, evening activities for children, after-school activities, but we need to get those rooms renovated in order to do that,” Tucy said.

“We are continuing to work here at the Edwards Association. Any volunteer work that we could get we would definitely welcome that. And I just want the community to know that the Edwards Community Center is open to the entire city and county of Gonzales,” Tucy added.
