The Gonzales County Veterans Memorial Association took a giant step forward in the development of the Gonzales County Veterans Memorial on Tuesday, Dec. 26, as site work began, including measurements and layout before dirt could begin turning.

The monument will be located on Moore Street, across from the Gonzales Memorial Museum amphitheater and next door to the Thomas Shelton Chapter House of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Members of the GCVMA board met Tuesday morning with Bubba Ehrig at the memorial site to discuss the project, which will cover an area of roughly 120 feet by 100 feet near the historic World War I cannon.

Among supporters of the project are Gonzales VFW Post 4817, the Gonzales American Legion Post 40, Gonzales Odd Fellows Lodge 38 and the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture as well as a number of private citizens who want to see greater recognition of the county’s veterans.

Board member Larry Mercer said the organization is taking orders for engraved brick pavers, with an order form available on the group’s Facebook page. Order forms are also available at the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce office at 304 Saint Louis St.; Gonzales Main Street office at 305 Saint Lawrence St.; or from any GCVMA board member.

Paver bricks are $100 for a 4×8 without a logo and $110 for a 4×8 with a logo. They are available in red or brown and contained space for up to 60 letters, symbols or spaces without a logo or 45 letters, symbols or spaces with a logo.

Orders and checks should be sent to GCVMA, 562 County Road 238, Gonzales, TX 78629.
