Local property tax relief event well received

Gonzales Community Advocates sponsored a property tax relief event, “Understanding and Navigating the Protest Process,” May 17 at the Texian Heritage Conference Center in downtown Gonzales.

Guest speaker for the event was Michael Berlanga, CPA, LREB & property tax expert, who stated that this was “a very successful event, standing room only.”

Many topics were addressed including the appraisal process, with emphasis on real property appraisers being responsible for approximately 5,000 properties each, creating a systemic problem, statewide.

The issue of appraisal board/panels having no experience was discussed (with the instruction packet for new panel members being reviewed, including the instruction to “not fall asleep”).

The biggest topic, and arguably the most important, of the training was the right to discovery of your own evidence and the appropriate process (in written form, 14 days prior to a formal hearing), as well as the right to appeal via arbitration in lieu of litigation.

Attendees were engaged and actively learning from Berlanga, who received his master’s degree in income tax after his father’s death in an effort to not be a burden for his mom and to actively contribute to public service.

Berlanga is a current independent candidate for Texas Comptroller on the state ticket and devotes much of his time to public service and teaching the community about their rights as they relate to property and taxation.

It’s important to be educated, understand the process and be prepare to protect your property with knowledge of the tax process.
