Miss Gonzales County contest changes format

Posted

The Come and Take It Celebration, as you may well know, is the largest annual festival in Gonzales County. But what you may not know is the Come and Take It Celebration is a vehicle, of sorts, through which many local clubs and organizations make their operating money for the year. That money comes back to the community in the form of scholarships, special projects and more.

The Miss Gonzales Pageant has traditionally been a fundraiser and a community benefit, raising funds that go toward scholarship opportunities for whomever wins the crown.

In years past, a pageant has been put on to raise monies. Young ladies have participated in pageantry that included formal wear and question and answer sessions with a panel of judges. In 2017 the contest, put on by Gonzales County Chamber of Commerce, has changed format. Instead of pageantry, Miss Gonzales will be crowned by popular vote, like our neighbors in Luling crown their queen at their annual Watermelon Thump. Participants will campaign and be elected by the money they raise.

If you are interested in running for Miss Gonzales County, the chamber asks that you please talk it over with your parents and if they agree, fill out the Candidate Profile sheet and return it to the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce located at 414 St. Lawrence Street (Old Jail Museum). The deadline for application is Friday, Sept. 15.

The crown is a big responsibility. The queen and her court attend numerous parades during the year. The experience can be incredibly rewarding and enjoyable experience, as you travel to many places and meet lots of people while having the time of your life.

Those who desire to run for Miss Gonzales County will have to meet certain requirements/responsibilities in order to qualify and remain a member of the Gonzales County Royal Court.

Those with questions may contact the Gonzales Chamber at 830-672-6532.
