Soccer realignment gives Gonzales new opponents

As the Apaches soccer teams await playoffs, one thing for sure is certain. Gonzales will be placed in a new district with new challenges to face in the next realignment.

Last week, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) release the official district alignment for the 2018-19 season, placing Gonzales in a six-team district with La Vernia, Pleasanton, Poteet, Marion and Yoakum to form District 29-4A. Marion and Yoakum, both Class 3A schools, move up to 4A for soccer since UIL doesn’t have district alignments for classifications lower than 4A.

The alignment splits up formidable district rivalries between Gonzales, Austin Eastside Memorial and Giddings. Since Gonzales was placed in a district three seasons ago, district championships were either shared or won by these three schools.

Eastside Memorial is now reunited with Taylor and Cameron Yoe to form District 26-4A with Georgetown Gateway (girls’ soccer only), Manor New Tech, Rockdale and Hearne. Meanwhile, Giddings stays with La Grange, Smithville and Caldwell to form the seven-team District 25-4A with Bellville, Navasota and Hempstead.
