Unemployment rate decreases to 3.7 percent in Gonzales County

Unemployment in Gonzales County decreased to 3.7 percent in March 2024, with the county continuing to place the third-highest of the seven counties which comprise the Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area.

This decrease ends a trend of unemployment rates rising for the county for the current year, according to state Labor Market Information (LMI) figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

For the entire Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area, the unemployment rate for March 2024 was 3.7 percent, lower than the state average of 4.1 percent. This represented a total of 3,766 residents in Gonzales, Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties seeking employment out of a total workforce of 92,098 people.

The counties reporting in lower than Gonzales County are Lavaca County, with the lowest unemployment rate at 3.1 percent, followed by Dewitt County at 3.2 percent, Calhoun County at 3.4 percent, and Jackson County following at 3.6 percent. Gonzales follows with 3.7 percent, with Goliad and Victoria County closing in the highest position(s) at 4.1 percent.

For March 2024, there were 357 individuals in Gonzales County seeking employment out of a workforce of 9,572 with 8,720 reported as employed. In February 2024, there were 386 people seeking work in Gonzales County out of an employment force of 9,627 for a total unemployment rate of 4.0 percent.

In March 2023, Gonzales County had an unemployment rate of 3.4 percent. The 3.2 percent unadjusted unemployment rate for April 2023 was the lowest seen in Gonzales County since it was reported at 2.7 percent in March 2022.
