Unemployment rate increases to 4.0 percent in Gonzales County

Unemployment in Gonzales County increased to 4.0 percent in February 2024, continuing the year with the county placing the third highest of all seven counties which comprise the Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area.

This increase continues a trend of unemployment rates rising for the county for the current year, according to state Labor Market Information (LMI) figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

For the entire Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area, the unemployment rate for February 2024 was 4.1 percent, lower than the state average of 4.4 percent. This represented a total of 3,766 residents in Gonzales, Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties seeking employment out of a total workforce of 92,263 people.

The counties reporting in lower than Gonzales County areLavacaCounty, with the lowest unemployment rate at 3.5 percent, followed by Calhoun County at 3.6 percent, with Dewitt County having 3.8 percent, and Jackson County following at 3.9 percent. Gonzales follows with 4.0 percent, with Goliad at 4.4 percent, Victoria County closes in the highest position at 4.5 percent.

For February 2024, there were 387 individuals in Gonzales County seeking employment out of a workforce of 9,629 with 9,242 reported as employed. In January 2024, there were 346 people seeking work in Gonzales County out of an employment force of 9,367 for a total unemployment rate of 3.7 percent.

In February 2023, Gonzales County had an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent. The 3.2 percent unadjusted unemployment rate for April 2023 was the lowest seen in Gonzales County since it was reported at 2.7 percent in March 2022.
