BASKETBALL: Mustangs finish tourney with 3-1 record, second-place trophy

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs finished out their own tournament with two more wins Wednesday, Dec. 29. The Mustangs went 3-1 overall during the tourney to finish second with their only loss coming in the opener to Navarro.

On Wednesday morning, Nixon-Smiley (15-2) defeated the Halletsville Sacred Heart Indians, 73-40. Braxton Regalado led the Mustangs with 14 points, while Dustin Mejia scored 12 and Kade Dixon added 10. Other scorers included Brayden Martinez with eight, Jeremiah Munoz with six, Carl White Jr. with five, Aiden Flores and Ryan Paez each with four points, Ruben Bomer with three and Holden Canion and Fernando Mejia with two each.

In the closing game of the tourney, Nixon-Smiley defeated the Yorktown Wildcats, 51-35. Dustin Mejia poured in 22 points, while Martinez scored 12. Other scorers included Regalado and White with four, Dixon with three and Munoz, Luke Moses and Canion with two each.

The following Mustangs also received All-Tournament Honors: Bradyn Martinez, Dustin Mejia, and Jeremiah Munoz.

Nixon-Smiley will resume district play next Tuesday, Jan. 4, at home against the Luling Eagles.
