The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs powerlifting program turned in another strong performance this weekend at the Victoria St. Joseph Power Fest Meet, earning 2nd-place team finishes for both the boys and girls. Competing against a deep and talented group of lifters, the Mustangs showcased toughness, consistency, and a winning mindset across multiple weight classes.

At just 13 years old, Gonzales seventh-grader Briceson “Brice” Moore is already learning that football is about far more than what happens on the field.

Mustangs Improve to 3-0 in District with Win Over Karnes City The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs Boys Basketball team stayed perfect in district play on Friday night, defeating the Karnes City Badgers 68-61 to move to 3-0 in district.

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs picked up a huge district victory Tuesday night, defeating Karnes City to secure their first district win of the season. The Lady Mustangs played with great energy and effort on both ends of the floor, and their teamwork down the stretch helped seal an important win as the district race continues. Nixon-Smiley was led offensively by Ruby Mendez and Grace Gomez, who each scored 8 points. Sky’Lee Pape added 6 points, while Dulce Mosqueda and Gabriela Limon chipped in 5 points apiece to help keep the scoring balanced. The Lady Mustangs continued to battle throughout the night and found ways to make plays when it mattered most. Head Coach Trevor Johnson was proud of how his team responded in a must-win situation. “I am incredibly proud of the win our girls achieved tonight! The girls came through when we needed them most. I told them before the game that it was the most important game of the season and that I needed a team effort to get the job done, and they did just that. It has not been the start to district that we wanted, but we are excited to get back to work and ride this momentum into round 2 of district play.” With the win, Nixon-Smiley gains momentum heading into the second round of district play as the Lady Mustangs look to keep building confidence and continue improving each week.

Apache powerlifting turned in a strong showing at the Navarro Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24, with both squads finishing on the podium. The boys team placed third overall, while the girls team earned a runner-up finish.

The Gonzales varsity girls soccer team picked up its first district victory Tuesday, defeating Luling 2–1 on the road in its second district match of the season.

After a dominant win over San Antonio Memorial on the road Friday, the Gonzales varsity boys basketball team returned home to host the district leader La Vernia on Tuesday night. After a fast start that gave the Apaches an early 10-point lead, the Bears went on a big second-quarter run and cruised to a commanding win at Vic Salazar Gymnasium.

The Gonzales Lady Apaches split their most recent district games, earning a decisive road win Friday before falling at home Tuesday as the playoff race continues to take shape.

Despite controlling possession and outshooting their opponent, the Gonzales varsity boys soccer team dropped a 2–1 district decision to Luling on Tuesday night, marking the Apaches’ second straight district loss.

For the first time in several years, the Gonzales boys basketball program hosted a tournament and brought nine opposing freshmen teams in to play three games apiece on Saturday. The Apaches went 3-0 in the process and had a great showing while getting to showcase their talents in Vic Salazar Gymnasium as opposed to the auxiliary gym.

The Gonzales varsity basketball team split its final two non-district games of the season, taking down Sinton at home Friday night before falling to state-ranked Wimberley on the road Monday.

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs opened district play on Tuesday night with a tough road loss to the Poth Pirates, falling by a final score of 69–25.

Gonzales opened its powerlifting season Jan. 8 by hosting the annual Apache Invitational at a packed Vic Salazar Gym, where school records fell, first-time lifters impressed and the Apaches showcased the depth and growth of a young program competing in front of its home crowd.

Nixon-Smiley senior Cash Davis capped off his high school football career with a strong performance in the San Antonio All-Star Game, representing Team Blue in a hard-fought 26–18 victory.

The Nixon-Smiley Mustang Powerlifting program launched its fundraising for the 2026 season with a high-energy Lift-A-Thon on January 3, as athletes lifted for a cause and community members stepped up to support the Mustang lifters’ goals.
