The Gonzales Lady Apaches split their most recent district games, earning a decisive road win Friday before falling at home Tuesday as the playoff race continues to take shape.
Gonzales opened the stretch with a commanding 67–25 victory over San Antonio Memorial Rockets on Friday night in San Antonio. The Apaches controlled the contest from the opening tip, using defensive pressure and balanced scoring to pull away early and keep Memorial off balance throughout the game.
The win improved Gonzales to 4–1 in district play and solidified the Apaches as one of the top contenders in the standings.
On Tuesday night, Gonzales returned home to face district leader La Vernia Bears and fell 71–32. La Vernia remained undefeated in conference play with the victory, while Gonzales dropped to 4–2 in district.
Despite the loss, Gonzales remains in a strong position for a postseason run. The Apaches are tied for second place with Cuero Gobblers, both sitting at 4–2 as district play moves into a pivotal stretch.
Friday’s matchup between Gonzales and Cuero now looms large, with playoff seeding implications on the line. The winner will move into sole possession of second place, while the loser drops to third behind La Vernia.
The rivalry between Gonzales and Cuero adds another layer of intensity to the contest. The two programs have battled closely in recent seasons, including an overtime win by Gonzales earlier this year, setting the stage for a heated rematch Friday night at Vic Salazar Gymnasium.
