The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs opened district play on Tuesday night with a tough road loss to the Poth Pirates, falling by a final score of 69–25.
Despite the score, the game provided valuable experience for a young Lady Mustang squad that was significantly shorthanded. Nixon-Smiley competed hard throughout the night while adjusting to new lineups and roles against an experienced Poth team.
Head coach Trevor Johnson emphasized the growth opportunities that came from the game.
“Although we took a tough loss, we took away some positives, as some of our role players were able to get some valuable reps,” Johnson said. “Being down our two leading scorers, rebounder, defensive specialist, and ball handler due to injury and sickness is tough for any team to overcome. I feel once we settled down and stepped up and understood what was needed, we played a lot better. Looking forward to our next matchup against Goliad.”
The Lady Mustangs will look to build on those lessons as they continue district play, with their next game scheduled against Goliad.
